Battling Spiritual Depression – (Philippians 4:8)

April 3, 2020 by Charles Specht

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true…dwell on these things.” (Philippians‬ ‭4:8‬)

Do you sometimes get depressed easily, or even slip into moments of spiritual depression?
Unfortunately, I do. It happens way more often than I’m comfortable admitting to, and I find that it tends to come during seasons of isolation away from God’s people.
Frankly, lack of Christian fellowship depresses me spiritually.
Too often during those moments I allow my mind and thoughts to run amuck and I start listening to the “little voice” on my shoulder whispering things like:
“You’re not necessary.”
“God doesn’t love you.”
“You should just be quiet.”
“You’re not helping anyone.”
Sadly, it is during those depressing times that I start acting like what the apostle Paul wrote about when he said: “For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.” (Romans‬ ‭7:15‬)
What I’ve come to learn over the years in my walk with Christ is that I need to stop listening to the sinful negativity of my flesh and start reminding myself of the perfect promises of God.
For example … we need to remind ourselves to think on what’s true. (And we need to remind one another of that as well!)
Below is a Bible verse that should help you do just that.
Read it, meditate on it, and memorize it for when you need the strength that only God supplies.
Stay encouraged, my friends! Don’t let the darkness of unnecessary fear consume you!

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (Philippians‬ ‭4:8‬)
